Kothea was recently asked: do sheer fabrics have a rub test?
The Martindale rub test is an abrasion test. It mimics the wear a fabric experiences when used on upholstered seating. Any fabric can be put through the test procedure.
Sheer fabrics are used for curtains and blinds, not for upholstery. So the answer is no. A rub test is not relevant to sheer fabrics because they are not used on sofas.

TEST METHOD AATCC 16 Option 1 or 3 – 2003* The AATCC 16 Option 1 and 3 are test methods of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). ACT recognizes both methods where the only difference is the light source being used. In AATCC 16 Option 1 a Carbon-Arc lamp is used as the light source and in AATCC 16 Option 3 a Xenon-Arc lamp is used. Under both methods a strip of fabric (part of which is protected by a special paper card) is placed in a fadometer and exposed to 40 hours of accelerated fading units (AFU). After the exposure the difference in color between the exposed and protected parts of the fabric are compared to the AATCC gray scale and the degree of fading is rated.
Grade 5 = no fading
Grade 4 = slight fading
Grade 1 = high degree of fading

Ultra violet light is one of the major contributing factors that cause fading and fabrics to break down. Here are some simple tips to optimise the life of your curtains:
Always use good quality lining.
Consider the compositions of fabrics; some will fade and break down faster than others.
Sunscreen blinds are recommended
Always allow space for your curtains / blinds to be pulled back off your windows.

No fabric company can self-certify the fire retardancy of their fabrics. Certification can only be issued by a UKAS-accredited test laboratory. The following is a summary of fire retardancy requirements by application.
1. Domestic
Curtains. No fire treatment is required.
Upholstery. The fabric must pass the match test (BS 5852 Source 1). The designer must first confirm the fabric passes the cigarette test (BS 5852 Source 0). The cigarette test meets the equivalent European standard BS EN 1021-1. The match test meets BS EN 1021-2. Fabrics containing at least 75% natural fibre content do not usually require treating for the cigarette test, but a Schedule 3 fire-retardant interliner must be used.
2. Contract
Curtains. The fabric must be treated to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B. Some fabrics meet this standard inherently; most require treatment. Some fabrics cannot be treated to this standard.
Upholstery. The fabric must be treated to BS 5852 Source 5 (Crib 5). This typically involves the fabric being back-coated, and most fabrics can be treated in this way. BS 7176 covers BS 5852 and additionally includes the cigarette and match tests and a water-soak requirement.
3. Other Applications
Headboards, bed covers, wall coverings, yacht interiors, and aviation interiors may have differing requirements. Confirm the applicable standard with the relevant authority before specifying.
There is broad equivalence between British and European standards. Standards for the United States are different and should be confirmed separately for any project with US compliance requirements.
